Things To Do at Big Bear Lake California

Posted by in Outdoors | Comments Off

Is the city getting you down? Are you are thinking about getting away from it all in Big Bear?  Are you maybe wondering what you will do after you relax a bit — a bit afraid you might get bored?   If you enjoy sports and the great outdoors, we can pretty much guarantee that won’t happen. Believe me, there is no shortage of things to do at Big Bear Lake and Big Bear Mountain!

After you have arrived and settled in to your lodging in Big Bear Lake, you’ll want to explore the area and partake in some of the activities offered.  Obviously, most of those options revolve around the lake in the summer and the mountain in the winter.

During the summer, you will want to try your hand at fishing.   Fishing from the beaches or docks works fine because the lake is populated with large numbers of trout, crappies and other game fish.  Of course, the cursed carp is there, too, but there is no limit on carp if hunted by bow and arrow. How’s that for adventuresome!

Your California vacation planning for Big Bear should also include renting a boat (and a captain if you aren’t qualified to safely operate it) to go out on the lake.  Just speeding around in a power boat can be big fun, and the float boats can get you into the shallow coves to explore the areas where fish love to lurk.

The para-sailing pull-boat can set you up to fly high in the sky, and then get reeled in, all without ever touching the water!  Jet skis are the opposite — you definitely will get wet using them — and kayaks are simple and fun and a great source of exercise. Golf and tennis are also available during the non-snow months.

During the winter, most of the important things to do in Big Bear deal with snow and the mountain — skiing, apres-ski drinking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and so on.  Cuddling next to the fire with your spouse or girl/boy friend is also a very popular wintertime activity!

In October, the Oktoberfest is a huge celebration with lots of things to do — from drinking beer, to music, to taking the kids to the bouncy castle, to eating tons of sauerkraut!  You may want to try your hand at the stein holding matches, log sawing competitions, safe slam beer drinking contests or the annual queen stein carrying contest. Bull riding is available, too, if you’re feeling wild and crazy. If not, you can simply relax and enjoy the clogging and polka dances.

Big Bear is definitely a “never a dull moment” sort of destination!

Using heavy duty tarps to enhance your camping experience!

Posted by in Outdoors | Comments Off

If you like to spend some of your weekends camping in the wild, then I would like to suggest you that you try to use tarps in your camping trip instead of tents the next time that you are out there. I have been camping for nearly 6 years now, but only in these last 6 months I have been experiencing with tarps instead of tents. I must say, this has taken my camping trip to a whole new level. If you would like to also try that, then there are some recommendations that I would like to talk with you about it.

One thing that you must realize is that heavy duty tarps are way more versatile than tents: you can use them to patch any holes that you might have in your equipment, you could use them as ground covers or to shield you and your family from the wind. Always have an open mind when using tarps and I am sure that you will be able to find many different uses for it.

One thing that you need to check in your tarp before you buy it, is the right spacing between grommets. You should have reinforced grommets every thirty inches or so. Any less than that and you might have problem while pitching your tarp against heavy winds. Additionally, ensure that all those grommets have a waterproof protection around them to ensure that they will last as long as possible.

Also, before you buy a tarp for you, verify if your chosen tarp is tear resistant and mildew resistant. This is a really important aspect of a tarp that you must check it out before purchasing it. Since you will be moving your tarp quite a lot and pitching it in many different conditions, it is really important that your tarp is strong enough to support that.

I hope that with these tips you shall be able to have a camping experience like no other! Take your time and buy a good set of tarps which will definitely make a difference in your camping experience!

Summer Fun with Outdoor Wooden Playsets

Posted by in Outdoors | Comments Off

Humid summer days are best spent outdoors where kids can learn new things and discover new talents. Aside from pink lemonades and cookies in the afternoon, introduce a fun-filled adventure to your kids through outdoor wooden playsets. Every kid loves swings, slides, and monkey bars. They can have them all with their very own wood playset right in your very backyard.

But why choose wood playsets over metal or plastic ones? Playsets made from hard wood or pressure-treated lumber are more resistant to warping caused by extreme weather conditions. For a more weather-resistant playset, get those with thick 4×4 beams. Wooden playsets are also firmly set on the ground making them sturdy enough for rough play. Metal playsets tend to get rusty when exposed to rain and snow. On the other hand, plastic playsets get easily toppled over because they are lighter. After some time, plastics get brittle.

Keep your outdoor wooden playset in tiptop condition. Most playset frames have metal screws and clasps. To make them last longer, apply oil every once in a while. Wipe off any water that may have pooled in on your wooden playset. Make it a habit to check for loose screws and fittings. Constant jumping and running around the wood playsets tend to disjoint even the toughest frames.

Kids can play in backyard wooden playsets the whole year round. And yes, grade-A slide and swingsets can last for a lifetime! As Junior grows up, his playset gets more adventurous, too. Soon, baby buckets will be traded for swinging tires. Slides will become more daring. Forts for pirate play-pretends will be exchanged for climbing walls. Sandboxes will be fitted with monkey bars.

An outdoor wooden playset is fun for the whole family, whatever age, even the young at heart! Wonderful memories are created while supporting a healthy lifestyle for your entire family.
