Alternative Treatment Options for ADHD

If you are a parent of a child suffering from ADHD and you don’t like the idea of treating your child with prescription drugs, then you should be aware of the many alternative treatments for ADHD that your child can try to improve their condition and reduce their symptoms. These include:

1.      Dietary intervention: Processed sugars have been associated with the ability to make people alert. This is because processed sugars can immediately be absorbed into our bloodstream. This can make an ADHD child, who is already hyperactive, even more hyperactive. Instead, supplementing their diet with fiber-rich foods, such as berries and whole grains, can drastically improve their symptoms of ADHD and reduce their level of hyperactivity.

2.      Behavioral interventions: With this kind of alternative treatment, the patient and his parents are taught many skills that are beneficial to the both of them. The parents are taught skills that will help the child. The parent is also taught how to understand the child and be a good parent and disciplinarian. On the other hand, the child is taught many skills that can help him control his behavior.

3.      Interactive metronome training: With this therapy, the patient will have to interact with a computer. The computer will do something and the patient will have to imitate what the machine did. After this session is complete, a feedback report will be provided so that the patient will know if he imitated the machine in a satisfactory manner. If he did not, then he will strive to focus more to do it well the next time. If he does it well the next time, then he will strive to do it again and feel satisfied.

4.      Chiropractic medicine: With this type of treatment, the child’s spine will be adjusted to normalize his brain function because some theorists believe that if the spine is not aligned with the brain, then this will make the child’s brain function abnormally.

5.      Neurofeedback: The child’s brain activity will be monitored by a machine that is attached to his head. The machine will give him an idea of what is happening inside his brain. With this, he will learn how his brain reacts and if it does not react normally, then he will correct himself in order to make the machine read normally. He will do this until he learns how to react appropriately on his own without the help of the machine.
